Why Volunteer with
Stand-by-me Bereavement Support
Volunteering with Stand-by-me Bereavement Support offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of bereaved children, young people, and their families in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage.
By giving your time, you can choose to help by either providing vital emotional support and guidance during one of the most challenging times in their lives, helping them navigate grief and build resilience, or help indirectly by raising awareness of the service Stand-by-me offers and the vital funds needed to continue to support the children we support.

At the same time, volunteering can be deeply rewarding for you – it fosters personal growth, enhances your listening and empathy skills, and connects you with a compassionate community.
Many volunteers find that supporting others also helps them find purpose, reduce stress, and improve their own well-being, making it a truly meaningful and mutually beneficial experience.
We have two volunteer roles:
Bereavement Support Volunteer
Our Bereavement Support Volunteer plays a vital role in providing compassionate support to children, young people, and their parent/carers who are experiencing grief. Working as part of a team within our Therapeutic Groupwork programme, your role aims to help children, young people and their families process their emotions, develop coping strategies, and feel less isolated in their grief journey.
Community Volunteer
As one of our Community Volunteers, you will play a vital role in representing the charity. Your primary responsibility is to raise both awareness and funds to enable Stand-by-me to continue to provide bereavement support for children, young people and their families.

What Our Volunteers say
Volunteering has not only allowed me to contribute to the community but has also helped me feel a true sense of belonging. I’m proud of the role I play here, and this journey has even helped me to process my own bereavement in a meaningful way.
Bereavement Support Volunteer
When I learned of the charity, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to volunteer. SBM is the charity I needed as a child and it’s a privilege to support CYP in their hour of need. The training has developed my own grief process, and I personally have benefitted from the theory and the strength and caring of all those I am surrounded by.
Bereavement Support Volunteer
It was my time to give back… I couldn’t have chosen a better and most rewarding charity, where I feel so humbled and privileged to be working with bereaved CYP.
Bereavement Support Volunteer
Volunteering for this wonderful charity has been really cathartic & helped me to process my own grief. The strength & bravery of the children & young people is so inspiring.
